Setup

Offensive player at the wing with the ball, defender in stance at arm's length. Offense has three dribbles and may only score with a jump shot.

How it runs

  1. Offense attacks the defender's top foot to push him back.
  2. When the defender retreats hard, offense jumps off the inside foot away from the basket (step-back) and rises into the shot.
  3. When the defender shades to cut off the drive, offense hops sideways off the inside foot (side-step) to clear his hand.
  4. Shot must be taken within three dribbles.
  5. Rebound is live; offense gets one put-back jumper only.

Coaching point

Sell the drive first; the step-back only works if the defender believes you are going.
