Court diagram of the Beat the Blitz: Pull-Back, Split or Pivot Pass basketball drill: start positions and movement
Basket at the top. Orange circles: offense, X: defense, wavy line: dribble, dashed line: pass.

Setup

2-on-2 high screen plus an offensive fill player at the top slot. Defense traps every screen; a third defender guards the fill player and can rotate.

How it runs

  1. Screener sets the screen and the defense traps the ball handler.
  2. Handler protects the ball with a pull-back dribble, shoulder to the trap, to create space and a passing angle.
  3. If the trappers leave a gap, he splits with a long, low dribble.
  4. If the trap is tight, he pivots on the inside foot and bounces a pass to the rolling screener or the fill player.
  5. Screener rolls into the space behind the trap and plays 2-on-1 with the fill player.

Coaching point

Never turn your back or pick up the dribble in a trap.
