Basket at the top. Orange circles: offense, X: defense, wavy line: dribble, dashed line: pass.

Setup

Split into two teams and line each up at opposite ends of the floor. Only layups count. Each basket is worth two and the game goes to eight.

How it runs

  1. An attacker sets off down the floor; the defender cannot leave until the attacker enters the centre circle.
  2. Play it out 1-on-1 all the way to the rim – layups only, no jump shots.
  3. The player who was defending immediately turns, picks up a ball and attacks the other way against the next player entering from the opposite line.
  4. The player who was attacking joins the back of his line. Keep going until one team reaches eight.

Coaching point

The head start is the whole drill; the defender has to make up ground and still get in front.
